Clarence Runners 3K Social Group Celebrates Its First Anniversary
Clarence Runners is celebrating the first anniversary of its popular 3K Social Group – a group that has helped participants build confidence, make new friends and take the next step on their running journey.
The idea was the brainchild of Andrea Sidebottom, who recognised the need for a welcoming group that could bridge the gap between the Jeffers sessions and the 5K Social Group. Originally launched as a four-week trial in September 2025, the response was so positive that the group quickly became a permanent part of the Thursday evening programme.
Over the past 12 months, the 3K Social Group has welcomed runners of all abilities. Whether they were returning to running, improving their fitness, building confidence or simply enjoying the social side of running, participants have found a supportive environment where everyone is encouraged to run at their own pace.
During its first year, nearly 300 participants have taken part in the 3K Social Group, demonstrating just how popular the concept has become.
Andrea Sidebottom said, “Some people find it daunting taking the step from Jeffing to running 5K. So I suggested a 3K group to give people the confidence to progress from the Jeffers to the 5K Social Group at their own pace. We run at a steady pace which builds the stamina to progress into longer runs. It’s been fantastic to see so many people enjoying the group, supporting one another and growing in confidence.”
Over the last year, the group has become an important stepping stone within Clarence Runners, helping participants develop the confidence and stamina to progress while enjoying the social side of running.
Clarence Runners was founded in January 2022 by Nick Whitley and has grown into a thriving community running group, offering opportunities for runners of all abilities.
Nick Whitley, Founder and Chair of Clarence Runners, said, “Seeing the success of the 3K Social Group has been fantastic. It shows what can be achieved when people are given encouragement and support in a friendly environment. I’m incredibly grateful to Andrea for her vision, and to all of our LiRF-trained run leaders and volunteers who give up their time each week to make our sessions possible. As I always say – you never regret a run.”
Regular participant Gill Warde added, “When i started in the jeffing group last year, as a total novice, the 5k seemed too much of a leap for me so the introduction of the 3k was perfect! It really has given me more confidence in my running abilities. Everyone at Clarence Runners is so friendly, welcoming and supportive for all abilities and I really look forward to my Thursday run”
Affectionately known as “The Ducks” because of the duck proudly displayed on the group’s distinctive blue running shirts, Clarence Runners continues to grow thanks to its friendly, inclusive and community-focused approach.
Clarence Runners hopes the 3K Social Group will continue to welcome many more participants over the coming years and help even more people discover the enjoyment and benefits of running.
